Areas of work:

.Promoting interconnectivity of IP-enabled communications with an initial focus on voice applications. The IP Alliance may, as supported by its membership, also consider other IP-enabled communication services and applications such as presence, instant messaging, multimedia, events and conferencing collaboration.

.How P-enabled communications entities address and develop financially responsible industry-based solutions to satisfy social and economic policy objectives such as emergency response, law enforcement, security and privacy, naming and addressing.

.How best to foster and protect the rights of users of IP-enabled communications, including access content, use of personally selected applications, attaching standards-compliant personal devices, service plan information, and privacy and security.

.How to ensure that IP-enabled communications may grow unregulated, or with as little regulation as possible, and consistent with the goal of fostering open IP-enabled communications across the Internet.

.Support for interconnecting the increasing number of VoIP and IP-enabled communications islands into an interoperable and interactive IP-enabled communications global network of networks by using open global Internet standards. Members of the Global IP Alliance may choose to maintain their own Intranets and other internal IP-based communities.

.Support for interconnections between IP-based communications providers in a responsible way, so as not to expose the networks to unwanted attacks and users to unwanted telemarketing and spam. For example, the Global IP Alliance will encourage IP-based communications providers to use the pertinent IETF and ITU-T standards and practices and should assure authenticated and correct IETF and ITU-T standards compliant transmission of the identity of their subscribers who originate a call.

.Support for models of financially sustainable Internet broadband service and financially sustainable IP-based communications service while at the same time promoting competition in the open market place to best serve the users of VoIP and IP-based communications in general.

.Support for balanced approaches for intellectual property protection and the promotion of open standards using similar guidelines as those customary for IETF. For example, the Global IP Alliance will support and encourage proponents of a technology or method shall, to the best of their ability, disclose any intellectual property claims and restrictions attached to such technology or method.

.Cooperation with other organizations or entities that are working to ensure the light-handed policy and regulatory treatment of VoIP.
